My opening statement: (You will argue that school uniforms should be required) Round one is for acceptance only. My opening statement: School uniforms shouldn't be required because they create a sense of anti-individuality, going against the Freedom of Expression, being forced to choose clothing can help prepare children for the adult world, and requiring school uniforms causes rebellion among the general student population.

Rebuttals: "Well buddy, when you rebuttal you are not supposed to be disrespectful or you will lose votes." This is not a valid rebuttal, you did not properly address my argument. "It tells people that you don't care for hygiene and it does show you are lazy because everyone knows you have more clothes and so do you. If you are just going to choose the same clothes over and over it will bother your surroundings." It will not bother your surroundings, and your first sentence makes no sense. "I agree with my opponent when she said: "With uniforms, it would be easier to understand if a child is in your school or not. Let's say you go on a field trip and your class splits up into 2 groups. Later it will be easier to find the other group because they are easily distinguished by their uniforms." But many schools use the same uniforms so one of the kids can wonder off and go into another school group and the teacher won't notice because that student has the same uniform." This is not an argument, this is another rebuttal. Also, you have agreed with me. Arguments: I would like to extend all my previous arguments. I would also like to say that Con has had no sources of proof. They have not displayed any sources, or addressed any of my arguments until round 4.

    School uniforms

Rebuttals: "Uniqueness should be shown and not hidden. Everyone needs to be themselves and not care what everyone else thinks of them. I have no school uniform and everyone loves being themselves. It is how we get to know each other." You don't need clothing to express your individuality. There are many other ways, like through art. Also, you can show your individuality out of school. Arguments: Since kids won't have to choose clothes in the morning, they would be able to get ready faster. This would allow in more sleep, which is better for learning. [1] In having uniforms, children's grades would improve because of the bigger amount of sleep they would achieve. Also, the amount of peer pressure in school would diminish. People would not have to worry about having specific brands to be superior to others. And lastly, you could remove clothing related to gangs. This would offer a safer environment in school. In conclusion, uniforms would better school, and the students learning in it. source: 1.http://healthysleep.med.harvard.edu... I would like to remind people that this a quick debate, so I will have short arguments.

    school uniforms

Uniforms are held to a specific standard when they are given to the school for reuse, just as if you were donating clothes to the needy. Children will not receive uniform that are stained or worn down, they have to be in a moderate shape. Kids at public school wear spandex to school and ill fitting clothing that isn't appropriate to wear to school. If the school isn't strict with their dress code, then children will be able to dress more freely.

    school uniforms

My opponent has made several contentions: (1) I am a student, (2) I know uniformed students - I hate them, and (3) uniformed students become so repressed they party too hard when they let loose. My opponent's arguments represent, respectively: (1) an appeal to authority. While my opponent may be a student, he is not necessarily every student, nor does his status as a student confer upon him any special abilities to discern the advantages and disadvantages of uniforms; and (2) & (3) sampling bias. My opponent has not provided carefully scrutinized statistics but rather his own selective sample of a group of uniformed hooligans. These hooligans may not be representative of the entirety of students who wear uniforms. In addition, the earlier mentioned problem with regards to the elimination of raucous parties appears to be no problem at all if the elimination of such parties preserves the safety of the students. I am sure there are some nice uniform-wearing students in the world, Con. You just need to meet them. Perhaps you could don a uniform and approach them in disguise. If they accept you, the uniforms must be working. As an aside, I went to a school that had a uniform and a school that had a dress code (elementary and high school, respectively). I don't know about all of the students, but I was an okay enough individual. Methinks uniforms might not be the cause of the issues of which you complain.

"Also, what was the violence like before uniforms? It's not impressive that it dropped 90% if there was little bullying in the first place. " If it dropped 90%, the violence must have had some impact on the school for them to keep track. I have also taken the liberty to pull some more statistics on how much safer and less-violent schools have been with uniforms. (This took place in Long Beach California) Overall, the crime rate dropped by: 91 % School suspensions dropped by: 90 % Sex offenses were reduced by: 96 % Incidents of vandalism went down: 69 % Assaults in grades K-8 decreased by: 85 % (http://www.statisticbrain.com...) Also, bringing back up the topic of cost..(where you are again proven wrong) "Uniforms can cost a lot depending on what school it is" The cost of uniforms is a concern for some families, but it has been shown that families in which the children wear uniforms spend almost 80 dollars less on clothing for their children for the school year compared to those who do not have children who wear uniforms. Also, 44 percent of the families in which the children wear uniforms believe that it keeps the children more focused on school. (http://www.ehow.com...) To conclude, Cited pros of school uniforms include decreased violence in schools and increased discipline of the students. Violence decreases because students are less likely to be picked on for their clothing, as there can be no focus on brand names. Along with this, students who are from poorer families are less likely to feel jealous or ashamed that they do not have the same clothing as those who are from wealthier families. Also, as the children wear the same things, it is difficult, if not impossible, for them to wear gang colors or other types of gang-related items. Discipline among the students increases because any tensions related to fashion or gangs have been lessened and students are more likely to be focused on the learning process.

Secondly, school uniforms don"t improve academic behavior. According to a national wide study of 10th graders conducted by the Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University discovered that "no effects of uniforms on absenteeism, behavioral problems, or substance use on campus" and "no effects" on "pro-school attitudes, academic preparedness, and peer attitudes toward school." (3)(4) A leader of the study, David L. Brunsma, PhD, found a "negative effect of uniforms on academic achievement" and that there is unchanged performance in children that attend elementary and middle schools. (3) Additionally, a 2009 study concluded that "no significant effects of school uniforms on performance on second grade reading and mathematics examinations, as well as on 10th-grade reading, mathematics, science, and history examinations... [I]n many of the specifications, the results are actually negative." (5) Based on the research, this demonstrates that school uniforms are ineffective towards curriculum activities and can be harmful to the education system. Thus, they are unnecessary to the learning environment. Sources: (3) David L. Brunsma, The School Uniform Movement and What It Tells Us about American Education: A Symbolic Crusade, 2004 (4) David L. Uniforms in school

Salutations. People can express themselves thought there attire, uniforms take away that method of expression. This is not world ending, but school is when people have to slowly find out how they are and what they want to be, so losing one of the ways to explore who you are is not great. Moving on, uniforms do not mean that there will be respect for everyone. They do stop bullying based of clothes, in general, but kids will find other things to pick on that may be more damaging than what someone wants to wear. Uniforms are also not the most effective way to save time, and if one does not want to worry about what to wear, they could wear a similar outfit every day. It would have a compatible effect to a uniform in time saving.

However, large volume manufacturers are producing very...

    School uniforms are good

    1) High Cost of School Uniforms- Uniforms are not cheap and this is a good reason to be against school uniforms. Because children are constantly growing, there is a captive market for new school clothes and manufacturers take advantage. However, large volume manufacturers are producing very cheap clothing for younger pupils at the moment so this argument against school uniforms may not stand up to too much scrutiny. 4) Freedom of Expression is stifled by School Uniforms- A uniform breeds uniformity. We need free thinking children to become the thinkers of tomorrow, not drones who will continue making the mistakes of pervious generations. When we argue against school uniforms we argue against an education system that seeks to produce workers and for an education system that seeks to produce enlightened fully rounded human beings. 3) School Uniforms do not cut down on bullying - No matter what you dress students in, they will always find a way to pass judgment upon their peers. The clothes are not the root cause of bullying and therefore the bullying will continue, regardless of dress policy. No matter what clothing rules apply, students will always find ways to pass judgment upon each other. Also allowing students to choose between a blue and red polo shirt doesn't reduce gangs. Also gangs don't have to show their colors to engage in activities. My source is http://www.angelfire.com...

I agree with you on the point of kids all being dressed...

    School Uniforms

Thank you, I appreciate you accepting my challenge, and offer the following counters: Yes, it is true there will be less immodesty in schools with uniforms, but is that the school's responsibility? Do you want how people dress to be taught to them by a school? People should be allowed to have their own individuality. If you really want to show school spirit, schools have one or two colors designated as that school's colors. You can wear those. It isn't fair to make others wear them if they don't want to. I agree with you on the point of kids all being dressed the same, therefore removing the bullying based on clothes-but richer kids will still bully the poorer kids because they don't have the latest video game, Ipod, car, whatever. That sort of thing isn't based off clothes alone. And who says they want to show pride in their school? Again, it isn't the school's right to mandate that. I know that whenever my school wants us to show pride, nobody really does, because they don't want to show pride in a school that seems very poorly run. I would also like to bring up money. You probably know that as it is, schools get a fair portion of taxes. If schools suddenly start wearing uniforms, the funding necessary for schools will increase. Schools will need the money to buy uniforms for the hundreds of thousands of kids attending schools everywhere in the U.S.A. Nobody wants a tax increase. I look forward to reading your next comments. Thank you.

University of Missouri assistant professor, David Brunsma...

School Uniforms Should not be Required

Virginia Draa, assistant professor at Youngstown State University, reviewed attendance, graduation and proficiency pass rates at 64 public high schools in Ohio. Her final analysis surprised her: "I really went into this thinking uniforms don't make a difference, but I came away seeing that they do. At least at these schools, they do. I was absolutely floored." Draa's study concluded that those schools with uniform policies improved in attendance, graduation and suspension rates. She was unable to connect uniforms with academic improvement because of such complicating factors as changing instructional methods and curriculum. University of Missouri assistant professor, David Brunsma reached a different conclusion. In his 2004 book, The School Uniform Movement and What It Tells Us About American Education: A Symbolic Crusade, Brunsma reviewed past studies on the effect of uniforms on academic performance. He also conducted his own analysis of two enormous databases, the 1988 National Educational Longitudinal Study and the 1998 Early Childhood Longitudinal Study. Brunsma concluded that there is no positive correlation between uniforms and school safety or academic achievement. In closing school uniforms also Help prevent gangs from forming on campus Encourage discipline by teaching students to adhere to rules Help students resist peer pressure to buy trendy clothes Diminish economic and social barriers between students Increase a sense of belonging and school pride How students can be creative at school -by being effective learners, the greatest form of creativity is expressed with knowledge -students can be creative in debate, science projects, chess, acting, sports Anecdotal evidence shows the effectiveness of uniforms Here is how school uniforms prevent bullying School uniforms make act as a leveler between rich and poor students because it means all students wear the same thing no matter what their socio-economic back ground. If students wore their everyday clothes their would be a big gap between what rich students wore and what poor students wore. Clothing would become an indicator of how well off a child's parents were. Children would inevitably begin to be bullied if they were not able to keep up with the latest and often expensive fashion trends. At school all students should be seen as equal amongst their peers and ensuring they all wear the same uniform is one way to ensure that is the case. Students will find enough reasons to bully each other on their own, we do no need to give them another one on the plate.

    School Uniforms benefit schools

DEFENITIONS SCHOOL- an institution where instruction is given, esp. to persons under college age (http://dictionary.reference.com...) UNIFORMS- an identifying outfit or style of dress worn by the members of a given profession, organization, or rank. (http://dictionary.reference.com...) BENEFIT- to do good to; be of service to (http://dictionary.reference.com...) CONTENTIONS 1. Uniforms reduce the individuality of the student Clothes are an important way that kids express themselves in a relatively harmless way. When you take this away, kids may express themselves in a more negative way. 2. Classism Only certain families are able to buy school uniforms, as they cost more than other clothes. This discourages any lower class students from going to a school with uniforms. This is clearly classism and blatantly discriminatory. 3. Equality Uniforms teach kids to judge people based on how they dressed, rather than the quality of their character. Children in any school, public or private, should always learn that people are equal to one another.

The $2050 clothes would only be worn on weekends, so they...

    School uniforms should be banned

Schools are a place of learning Schools are for education. You go there, you learn, you come home. You do not need the newest Jordan's and LAX 2 JFK to be successful in school. Uniforms do not impair on leaning. With the newest trends and how they look out of mind, students can focus on what matters: school. Uniforms are cheaper A new pair of Jordan's are 205 dollars. An LAX 2 JFK shirt is 35 dollars. Research has found that teenagers spend on average 21% of their earning on clothes[1] and $40 a week on clothes[2], most of this money coming from their parents[1]. If these teens had to wear uniforms then the money spent on clothes would be much less and remove a lot of the strain from the pockets of both them and their parents. The $2050 clothes would only be worn on weekends, so they wouldn't need a new outfit for everyday of the month[3]. The average cost for uniforms annually is about $249[4]. This is a significant difference. Though people complain about the price of uniforms, it's not too bad. You can also wear your uniform from the year prior if it still fits which saves you another $249. Uniforms prepare students for the real world Whereas dress codes are pretty relaxed allowing students to wear t-shirts, blue jeans and trainers, school uniforms prepare students for the real world. When you're an adult when you go to work you are wearing very close to how you're dressed in uniforms. It's dress shoes, khakis and dress shirts unless it's Friday. Schools are there to prepare children for the real world, what's a better way then giving them a dose of reality by putting them in monkey suits all day. That way they won't arrive to the office constantly adjusting their collar and scratching their pants. They would have had years of conditioning for it and would automatically know what to wear, what goes with what, how to tie a tie etc.. Uniforms can be individual If you're desperate to be different than you can with creative ways to express your individuality. You can use scarves, lipticks, cool backpacks, hair dyes, hair does and countless other ways to make you stand out and be individual. The thing about school uniforms though is the choice. if you don't want to be different of bullied simply don't. When you choose your own clothes if you don't have an eye for fashion, don't have a bunch of money to put into expensive clothes or you have to wear hand me down there's no way to hide that. With uniforms if you want to blend in simply keep your hair normal and that's it, they have nothing to tease you on. Don't believe appearance is even a factor? Nearly half of girls get bullied because of it[5]. School uniforms encourage unity School uniforms make students feel a sense of school pride being apart of a group of people dressed the same[6]. This feeling of unity can make people feel less excluded if they usually aren't part of a crowd and bring schools together. It's like a pep rally in every class.
