    2) The Rationale Behind School Uniforms School uniforms...

    school uniforms

Before refuting my opponent"s single line of argumentation, in this round I'll do the following: Offer Background information: -Explain what school uniforms are -Explain what school uniforms do Explore the rationale behind school Uniforms: -Suggest why school uniforms are useful -Examine why school uniforms are in the best interest of students and the schools they attend (1) Background School uniforms are standardized outfits worn by students, the composition of which is dictated by the educational institution which students attend. A typical school uniform may include a blazer, some form of khaki or navy pants, an oxford shirt and a repp tie for male and female students, or may include a skirt for female students. School uniforms are typically very conservative, non-revealing and non-discriminating. Because school uniforms preclude students from dressing as they would like if given the choice, school uniforms prevent brand-driven consumerism in academic settings, minimize differences among the student body, foster a sense of common identity among a student body and reinforce student"s focus on their education rather than their outward appearance. (2) The Rationale Behind School Uniforms School uniforms are useful because of the fact that they not only restrict students" clothing options, but they prevent the problems that come from "individualized" dress. For example, bullying because of appearances is minimized in both sexes because all dress in the same fashion. Because school uniforms are conservative (though still, at least ostensibly "preppy") students retain a sense of style without being judged for their inability to afford brand names, or dress provocatively. Students"s purpose in attending school is not to dress provocatively, to be "fashionable" or to dress in a way that does anything other than reinforce their being educated. On a more practical level, school uniforms solve the problem of "What am I going to wear?" that adolescents face when preparing to attend school. By requiring that students dress in a certain way, the challenge of choosing apparel is preempted and thereby prevented from being a problem. In this way, dress code violations are likewise addressed before they can even occur. My opponent, however, asserts that she thinks that school uniforms should have never been invented. I can only assume that this is because she has never considered the practicality or utility of school uniforms, which I have outlined above. I"ll await her rebuttal. Here are some examples of school uniforms: http://www.solidcolorneckties.com... http://2.bp.blogspot.com... Did I mention, that they wear school uniforms at Hogwarts? http://mugglemeetswizard.files.wordpress.com... http://www.freewebs.com... Oh, and some numbers too: "As of 2009 in the United States, there are 21 states with public school systems requiring their students to wear uniforms. A case study from 1999 conducted in Long Beach, California showed that instituting a uniform policy greatly reduced violence and other issues in the school. Crimes, suspensions and sex offenses were all reduced by at least 90 percent and vandalism dropped by almost 70 percent." Source: http://www.ehow.com... Peace out, YYW

No, The things definitely are not getting better because of teachers. Those statistics are getting better because of Those statistics are getting better because of school uniforms. I think the situation that is going on at your school is the kind of uniforms you guys wear. Your school doesn't really have a good choice when it comes to that. It honestly really depends on the quality of the school uniforms and also what kind they are. I believe if schools can adapt good school uniforms, Like the uniforms at Long Beach California, Then the school will be a more professional and a more safe environment.

    School Uniforms

Hello! I'm here to talk about school uniforms and why they should be accepted. Although most say that parents wont be able to afford these uniforms, it is also known that uniforms help stop bullying. I've heard and seen many humans being treated wrongly because clothing, but that can stop thanks to school uniforms. Who says that school uniforms are more than regular clothes anyway? I am also aware that children take a while to wake up in the morning and take even longer to pick out their clothes. Well, if we allow school uniforms then it would only take children a couple minutes to take whatever they need and a uniform. It also makes them feel better knowing that they look like everybody else. That is round one for me. I wish you luck to challenging me whoever you might be! :)

I understand that there is always a good chance that...

    Uniforms at School!

My Arguments: -Uniforms ensure equality among students. If children wear uniforms then they cannot be judged by what they wear. [1] -Uniforms make students less self-conscious of their appearance. Students would not have to have to stand in front of the mirror for half an hour every morning to decide if their outfit is good enough or what outfit to wear. This argument can be applied to many students, especially girls. -It shows signs of respect and politeness. You show respect to your school and teachers when you wear uniforms. -Uniforms save money. When you only have to wear two outfits a week that aren't your school uniform, you can have a more limited selection of clothing. You do not have to buy as much clothing, and therefore, you save money. In low income areas, uniforms would be a good idea because parents wouldn't have to worry about buying all sorts of new clothing for their children and children wouldn't feel pressured to have new cloth items to fit in because everyone would have the same clothing as they did. -Uniforms enforce discipline. Students are made to wear uniforms instead of whatever they want. -Teachers don't have to worry about dress code. Things to worry about in dress code: hats/hoods really short shorts/skirts etc... If there are uniforms then everybody will be dressed appropriately. This would give teachers one less thing to worry about. -It helps prepare students for their future jobs. Students learn how to dress appropriately for work. If they dress in t-shirts and jeans while they go to school then they might think that this would be OK to do when they go into jobs as adults. If this is what they learn at school, then this is what students would do as adults. I understand that there is always a good chance that parents might teach students how to dress appropriately but this doesn't always happen. [2] -School uniforms could lower the cases of bullying within schools. In many cases kids are insulted and picked on because of the clothes they wear and how they look. If all students wear the same thing it would be very hard almost impossible to make fun of someone who is wearing the same thing as you. -Making all children wear school uniforms would make them put more focus on school work. Kids wouldn't be constantly looking at what others are wearing and thinking about what they should be wearing. In addition to this, students often waste a lot of time shopping. If students had to wear uniforms then they wouldn't need/want to shop as much since there would never be a chance to wear the as much cloths. -Uniforms save water. This might seem like an odd argument at first site. However if you think about it, this argument would start to make more sense. Students would only have 2 uniforms per weak and wouldn't have as much chance to wash them. Today, many students wear one pair of jeans, one t-shirt, and one sweater per day and wash seven pairs of all three items every day. Students wouldn't have 5 uniforms (one for each school day) and as a result, a lot of water would be saved. -What studies show. Some studies show that school uniforms might help attendance and graduation rates. Studies show that having students wear uniforms would help them get through school. "...reported that mean graduation rates rose nearly 11 percent at schools that required uniforms, compared to pre-uniform years. Non-uniform school mean graduation rates dropped 4.6 percent, compared with the earlier years." [link below] http://www.19actionnews.com... The negative sides of uniforms: I agree that there are several negative sides to wearing uniforms. I will state some of them now and I will also state my arguments that oppose these points. -Students wouldn't get the freedom to choose what they want to wear. My response: People's lives must have some limits. Children and teens may want to wear whatever they like and would be very unhappy if they were forced to wear uniforms. However I showed that students would benefit from being forced to wear uniforms and that benefit is more important than freedom. -Students wouldn't be able to express themselves properly. My response: This is true. People are often judged by how they dress. If a student is dressed neatly and has clean clothes every day then teachers may think differently of that student than they would think of somebody who constantly has sagging jeans and dirty clothes. I haven't really responded to any of my opponents arguments since my opponent has not yet had the chance to state any. I simply stated my opinion and position on what I think my opponent's arguments will be in the next round. Conclusion: I have provided many arguments that support the idea of having uniforms at school. Although uniforms may be unpopular with many people, they are not a bad idea. Studies support my thinking. The future of students should be put in front of what individual stunts want to wear. Students would be more successful if they did not get the option of deciding what to wear every to school. After all, students can always wear whatever they want on the weekends. Weekends are for students to do what they want. I await arguments and/or responses from my opponent. Sources: http://www.angelfire.com... http://www.ehow.com...

    School Uniforms

School uniforms help schools portray discipline. It keeps schools somewhat in check. Usually public schooling doesn't require uniforms, some do, while catholic schools try to keep a uniform a requirement. According to Statisticbrain.com, Parents spend roughly 1.3 billion dollars annually on school uniforms, which breaks down to about 249 dollars per parent per year. That would be much cheaper than trying to get the newest clothing per year and spending money so that the child can have a new outfit of the "coolest styles" each day. School uniforms also try to keep the school itself united. The uniforms help diminish economic and social barriers between students. (greatschools.org)

1] This saves parents over $80 per child per year. ......

    School Uniforms

I'll assume round one is for arguments as my opponent seems to have presented a few. I. Introduction and Framework There are a variety of reasons school uniforms better the institutions in which they are instilled. These benefits are real and concrete, and will be difficult to refute with any potential abstract, non-tangible harms. Therefore, I affirm that school uniforms are beneficial to schools. Whoever best upholds impact on students' and parents' well being, particularly in the classroom, should win this debate. II. Uniforms can save parents money In 2013, the average parent spent $231 per child on back to school clothing. In the same year, the average school uniform spending was estimated to be less than $150. [1] This saves parents over $80 per child per year. Additionally, it is less likely that parents will have to buy new back to school clothes the next year, further decreasing costs. Additionally, clothes can be passed down from one child to the next without fear of the clothes going out of style in the same manner that would apply to non-uniform clothing. Cost efficiency is a clear benefit for the Pro side. III. Uniforms work to prevent displays of gang colors and logos According to a 2000 study by the National Association of Elementary School Principals, 75% of parents and 85% of staff surveyed agreed that the uniforms had led to a decrease in violence [2], especially related to gangs, as it gave groups little opportunity to showcase their colors and/or insignia on clothing. This makes the gang divisions and recruiting less prevalent on campus. IV. Uniforms improve academic performance In a 2004 study, uniforms were shown to have a positive relationship with improved attendance and graduation rates [3], the biggest impact in today's round. The role of the school is to be an institution of learning, and when uniforms help the school reach that goal it is the biggest benefit possible. V. Conclusion Students and parents both benefit from the Pro side, the students both in and out of the classroom. The resolution is affirmed. [1] http://parade.com... [2] https://www.gpo.gov... Since the opponent has fallen asleep, I'll express my point further. If clothes were that crucial to expressing individuality, you wouldn't be much of an individual. Also, not having a school uniform would mean more bullying to children whose family can't buy them the latest fashions. I haven't heard a single good argument against school uniforms at all. There are good arguments FOR school uniforms, yet there are only childish unreasonable arguments against school uniforms.

    School Uniforms

I would like to thank Liberal_moron for accepting this debate. (1) By having school uniforms, you restrict freedom of expression by students. This can closely be related to the case of Tinker vs. Des Moines as they were restricted to what they could wear such as an arm band. By limiting students to a uniform, kids aren't able to freely express their selves. "compelled conformity to conventional standards of appearance" does not "seem a justifiable part of the educational process." (2) By using a school uniform, it is promoted that a student has to conform to society and not individuality. It is shown to be a contradictory method when school uniforms are put into place as it contradicts the lesson that is suppose to be taught. Students learn everyday about history and how people were able to freely express their selves. By setting a standard of a school uniform, it reverses the process and starts an upbringing that students are no longer free. (3) By statistics, it is shown that violence and bullying did not reduce in numbers but actually increased. "A 2007 peer-reviewed study found that "(2) By using a school uniform, it is promoted that a student has to conform to society and not individuality. "A 2007 peer-reviewed study found that "school uniforms increased the average number of assaults by about 14 [per year] in the most violent schools." More assault and bullying cases seem to occur when school uniforms are brought into standard. While kids can try to think that they will be victim less inside their school, there is still the worry that kids from other schools that don't have uniforms may target them. (4) My last point I would like to argue is that school uniforms can have a detrimental effect on a student's self image. By allowing school uniforms, more students are prone to embarrassment by not only their peers but even by adults. By giving students a specific uniform, it allows them to be targeted at their insecurities. Having a school uniforms shows that the learning experience is more disrupted than without having a uniform.

    School Uniforms

To get started, I can agree to some of a extent with you that some violence does drop but that is still not weight to what cons having school uniforms have. To begin with this third round, I would like to bring up the point of embarrassment. As I am as well a high school student, by having school uniforms, my other peers would not be not only able to express their selves but also they would be vulnerable to attacks by other students not only inside our school but outside. By choosing to have a school uniform, kids would learn to pick on each other by calling out their insecurities. This would cause a rippling effect not only inside of the school but inside the school district. Many kids would not be able to focus on their school work while trying to figure out who and when will they get attacked next. (2) I would like to bring up the point of cost. School uniforms are not as cheap as you think, as each kid has to have at least 2 pairs which would cause the school district to order more. It is shown by statistics that a single As I am as well a high school student, by having school uniforms, my other peers would not be not only able to express their selves but also they would be vulnerable to attacks by other students not only inside our school but outside. It is shown by statistics that a single school uniform can cost in the upward range of 150 dollars. " http://www.classroomuniforms.com... " Having these type of cost would deter parents from wanting their kids to attend that school. Not only would cost of the school uniform come into factor but also that once the student is outside of school, more clothes would need to be bought so that the child has clothes besides their uniform. (3) My third and final point I would like to bring up is that the fact that children do not like school uniforms at all. Kids would happily love to wear their own clothes instead of wearing something that could look hideous. My peers as I have asked all have said that having school uniforms would cause disruption and would cause chaos that would extent all the way into near school districts. Kids and teens always want to express their selves and by giving them uniforms, you trap them into a world they do not want to live. In conclusion, by giving kids and teens school uniforms, their freedom and expressions are limited. Kids need to be able to freely express their selves without having to worry what the next person will think of them. In overall, having uniforms would cause chaos to occur and would drive up the cost that students and parents don't want to pay.

    School Uniforms

This topic is what got me interested in debating; my school chose me to be the fifth grade debater, and I was chosen to be on the against side. I cannot say I can argue this very well, sense I have not touched this topic after fifth grade. I believe that school uniforms are unnecessary. First, go to any school, and ask the students for their opinion on school. You'll get a lot of "I don't like it." Then ask them how their opinion would change if the school started using school uniforms. The students will most likely respond negatively. My source for this, though not reliable, is that I've done it. The next reason is that school uniforms often limit who can go to schools[1]. School uniforms can be costly,(I'm not saying these weird fashion trends aren't, either) and the fees of joining a school AND buying uniforms for EVERY day can be overwhelming for poorer families, and families who cannot afford all this cannot go to the school, while middle class and above can go just the same. Another common belief is that I cannot say I can argue this very well, sense I have not touched this topic after fifth grade. I believe that school uniforms are unnecessary. First, go to any school, and ask the students for their opinion on school. You'll get a lot of "I don't like it." Another common belief is that school uniforms will stop students from judging each other by how they look[2]. This is not true, as no matter how you limit students' looks, even if a country goes as far as segregation, students will always find a way that their peers are different and will always judge them this way. As my final argument for now, dressing students in fancy clothes does not make them more dedicated to school[3]. Clothes have very little relation to academics: I know of several child prodigies(not on source) that are terrible dressers. [1] http://education.newarchaeology.com... [2] http://www.angelfire.com... If they can't express themselves through their appearance...

    No school uniforms

Ladies and gentlemen, Though it is my first time debating in this website, Fear not! For I have experienced debating. I will try my best to rebut or post my argument in due time since I am having technical issues (don't ask me why) Anyhow, Let us begin. First, Let me define what a school uniform is. There is a difference between a dress code and a uniform. According to a scholar, This scholar said that a uniform can be called as a uniform if: > It serves the purpose of representing the school, > Suppresses individuality; > Proves legitimacy by exposing the student's position. Okay, Sure, I agree with the fact that they can express and it "becomes easier" for students whenever they go to school, But, Here is where your point slips up. Let me tell you the benefits of wearing a uniform: - EQUALITY - SCHOOL SPIRIT - DISCIPLINE > It supports discipline (not on a strict level) > It makes the student proud of the school they are in (because the school's emblem is imprinted in the uniform) > It improves school spirit > Promotes healthy relationships within student-teachers > Promotes individual self-expression > Reduces expulsions/suspensions > Decreased vandalism and crime > Increased chance of staying in school, Commitment to learn and much more. > Helps in repressing students to buy trendy clothes To make you understand better, Let me answer this through a Q and A: Q: School uniforms prevents students from expressing themselves A: So what? If they can't express themselves through their appearance then they can express themselves through other ways. Q: School uniforms does not decrease bullying and can increase violent attacks A: That is the reason why there are rules and regulations for this. And detention. And counseling. And expulsion. And many Q: School uniforms = Too tight/too loose A: Again, So what? If that's the case, Then a solution to this would be to create a system in which before school starts, Parents can adjust and measure the size of the uniform they need. Now, For the rebuttal: If there was no school uniform. . . . . . It would push students to wear trendy clothes or which are inappropriate. . . . School spirit would decrease . . . It will increase the likelihood of rape or sexual harassment . . . Rich families will make their children (or the children themselves decides) to wear expensive clothing, Which the financially challenged families can't, Causing competition. Dear audiences, If we were to implement the so called "no school uniforms", Schools would look like picnic grounds with actual students walking around. However, In order to solve the problem being "expressing yourself", Then simply just make it so that maybe at the last week or maybe the school can add events where students can wear their own attire. Henceforth, Whether it be with no school uniforms or yes school uniforms, The best answer here would be that YES SCHOOL UNIFORMS as it has already been implemented throughout the globe around the 1600's when it hit the historical records. This is one of the reason why my case stands better, Because of the mere fact that up until now, Uniforms are still being worn and used. Now, Tell me your specifics why there should be no school uniforms. Tell me who that writer you were talking about and when he/she stated that statement. My case is better and should be voted upon.

    School Uniforms

School uniforms have been around for many years. I believe it's time to drop the uniforms, and allow students to wear as they wish. Many supporters of this highly-debated topic say that school uniforms keep students, especially the ladies, modest. I don't see how a short skirt is keeping the girls modest, and isn't that what the regular public school dress code is for? Keeping their students dressing appropriately? School uniforms are doing nothing to benefit the education system. Making students wear the exact same outfit every day has no effect on grades, performance, or testing. Also, imagine if there were a kidnapping somehow during a recess/break, or in the restroom. Clothing is a great way to identify and track down the victim, but if all the children are wearing the same thing, it'll be way easier for the kidnapper to successfully change their look. Just an insane scenario, you know? In the long run, I think students should be allowed to wear their choice of clothing to school, as long as it's appropriate.

    School Uniforms

Sorry, didn't feel the need to take the time out just for my statement. There's no proof that uniforms are beneficial to the classroom or the students' performance. Even if there was ONE study about it improving academics, there's no solid, wide-ranged, unbiased, proof that it can improve performance internationally in schools. No parent is forced to buy back to school clothing, while the uniform is mandatory. Households with financial problems could be saving almost $2,000 per student for their entire school career by not buying the uniforms. No household is required to buy brand new clothes for the school year. Many parents rely on recycled clothing and hand-me-downs, saving them money. The public school dress code is made solely for the purposes such as covering gang signs/logos, inappropriate language, etc. There's no need for a uniform when the regular dress code can do the exact same job, but still letting students wear what they want. Many schools with uniforms are private, which would explain the higher graduation rate, even without a uniform policy. There's no hard evidence that uniforms increase performance in public schooling.

If a student is sad about there appearances in clothing...

    Uniforms at School!

Thank you Pro. I ask voters to please enjoy the following debate. I will admit that I did not quote his every word. If I did so I would not have been able to type a proper response. However I did respond to his every point. So without further ado: Refutations: "Uniforms ensure equality among students. If children wear uniforms then they cannot be judged by what they wear" Then the bullies would likely find a new thing to give them shame about. How do we know it wouldn't be a worse thing? And what about weekends? As you even said: "After all, students can always wear whatever they want on the weekends. Weekends are for students to do what they want" This directly shows that on weekends, the bullies are able to bully the students who wear odd clothing. In fact, by doing this you are increasing the bulling because you have just encouraged the bullies to find a new flaw in that student. I fail to find this a better way to ensure equality. "Uniforms make students less self-conscious of their appearance. Students would not have to have to stand in front of the mirror for half an hour every morning to decide if their outfit is good enough or what outfit to wear. This argument can be applied to many students, especially girls" 1.Not even a shred of evidence is shown to assert that students stand in front of a mirror for half of an hour every morning. 2.His reasoning in this section does not support even his original argument, that students would not be self conscience about appearances. Only support for an argument that it would save time. 3.Even if we assumed his argument is complete, students would still feel rather ridiculous in uniforms. If a student is sad about there appearances in clothing they have chosen and bought, why would a uniform make them feel less self conscience? "It shows signs of respect and politeness. You show respect to your school and teachers when you wear uniforms" There are different ways to respect your school. I can respect America, but I do not have to wear a giant flag every day to prove it. Why would it be wrong for a student to show respect in another way, or have a neutral viewpoint on the school? "Uniforms save money. When you only have to wear two outfits a week that aren't your school uniform, you can have a more limited selection of clothing." This would be showing that students do not buy any other articles of clothing. I yet again quote: "After all, students can always wear whatever they want on the weekends." Pro is saying students will not wear uniforms when the week ends. We will obviously need more clothing for that student. The real major problem with this though is the average cost of a uniform is $249. Remember, this is being added on to regular clothing costs and expenses. [1] "Uniforms enforce discipline. If there are uniforms then everybody will be dressed appropriately. This would give teachers one less thing to worry about" Why would students be more compelled to wear a uniform than they would to follow the dress code? "Making all children wear school uniforms would make them put more focus on school work" Where in your sources does it say this? "Today, many students wear one pair of jeans, one t-shirt, and one sweater per day and wash seven pairs of all three items every day. Students wouldn't have 5 uniforms (one for each school day) and as a result, a lot of water would be saved." Students do not wear 7 outfits per a day my friend. With a uniform however, a student would be forced to wash at the very minimum once every other day. Which would be a big waste, considering they would have little to wash. "Some studies show that school uniforms might help attendance and graduation rates. Studies show that having students wear uniforms would help them get through school" My only rebuttal to this is that often times those are more wealthy schools if they have uniforms. Private schools for example. Could you determine somehow in what schools this was conducted in? In may just be a different curriculum, or rather a false cause. "People's lives must have some limits" The religious people are not allowed to where religious articles of clothing? A dress code is a more practical limit, as it allows these things. "This is true. People are often judged by how they dress. If a student is dressed neatly and has clean clothes every day then teachers may think differently of that student than they would think of somebody who constantly has sagging jeans and dirty clothes" He does not present a rebuttal on how it is justified. The argument stands. Conclusion: Uniforms tend to cause more harm than good, as shown in arguments. Vote Con. Thank You. [1] http://www.statisticbrain.com...

school uniforms are just wrong. unless you are in a privatwe school you should not have to pay a large sum of money to wear a uniform. the reason children go to a public school is that they might not have as much money as everyone else. another problem with the uniforms is that kids should be able to express themselves anyway they want.

    School uniforms

With uniforms, you don't follow your peers, you follow the rules. With uniforms you learn how to listen to rules. Without uniforms, you would buy what your peers buy, if you actually read my arguments." Well buddy, when you rebuttal you are not supposed to be disrespectful or you will lose votes. "Picking the same clothes does not make you lazy." It tells people that you don't care for hygiene and it does show you are lazy because everyone knows you have more clothes and so do you. If you are just going to choose the same clothes over and over it will bother your surroundings. Argument: I agree with my opponent when she said: "With uniforms, it would be easier to understand if a child is in your school or not. Let's say you go on a field trip and your class splits up into 2 groups. Later it will be easier to find the other group because they are easily distinguished by their uniforms." But many schools use the same uniforms so one of the kids can wonder off and go into another school group and the teacher won't notice because that student has the same uniform.
