"They throw students off focus and fail. Not only do they bother other people, but they are also horrible!" As the instigator you have the burden of proof to prove that claim. I claim the contrary however. Schools that have made it a requirement to wear Not only do they bother other people, but they are also horrible!" As the instigator you have the burden of proof to prove that claim. I claim the contrary however. Schools that have made it a requirement to wear uniforms have reported increased attendance and graduation rates among their students. [1][2] The countries of Taiwan, South Korea, Singapore, Hong Kong, and Japan, have the highest average 8th grade math scores and are far above average.[3] The countries of Hong Kong, Singapore, Tawian, and Japan, have the highest average 4th grade math score and again, score far above average. [3] All of these countries require their students to wear uniforms nationwide. [4] I fail to see how your claim, "They throw students off focus and fail", hold any merit seeing that many schools report that their students graduate more often after making uniforms mandatory and that the countries that have the highest average scores in math require their students to wear school uniforms nationwide. It would suffice to identify the team players if, say,...

    School uniforms should be required

For this debate a "school uniform" is a specific design for clothing designated to be worn while attending academic classes at a school. The school context comprises grades one through twelve of public and private schools in the United States. Different schools and different grades within schools may have different uniforms, as determined by parents and school administration. The paradigm is that of Japanese schools, as shown in anime (http://answers.yahoo.com...). The reasons for requiring uniforms are: 1) It promotes identity with the school and class, which emphasizes the common educational purpose. It puts everyone in the same boat so they are more likely to help each other succeed. This is a reason why players on sports teams wear identical uniforms. It would suffice to identify the team players if, say, one team wore predominantly red and the other predominantly blue, or even just predominantly dark and light. Yet there is widespread agreement that having identical uniforms is important for the team psychology. 2) It removes the distractions of fashion trends and fashion competition from school hours, thereby reinforcing the educational purpose of the enterprise. It helps students focus. 3) It teaches boys to be neat and girls to be attractive. 4) It encourages students to evaluate people by their behavior and personality rather than by their manner of dress. 5) It allows individuals to express themselves in fashion outside of school, which reinforces the distinct nature of the educational environment. School uniforms in Japan coexist with cosplay outside of school. There are many factors that go into overall academic performance, so certainly school uniforms are not the only thing that counts. Nonetheless, the countries that score best on international tests (Hong Kong, Taiwan, Japan) are those that have the tradition of school uniforms. We may therefore reasonably conclude that it makes a positive contribution to having a serious attitude towards education. Uniforms contribute to the educational process.

    We need school uniforms

Source #3: Each school has its own set of uniforms, different colors and models. Facts: Uniforms save time Opinion: It takes no time to get ready for school in the morning when one is wearing a uniform Source #1: Uniforms don"t change and are bought at the start of the year Facts: Uniform shops are open before school starts and students buy a stock that will last for the full year Source #2: Some items of the uniform can be worn more than once Facts: Jackets and pullovers don"t have to be washed every day Source #3: Uniforms save a lot of time for students as they do not have to choose among different items Facts: More time is spent on choosing what to wear during the weekend and holidays

    School uniforms should be required

School uniforms themselves don't reduce the crime and violence in schools, it is the strict discipline and the way the school operates. Uniforms are simply a band-aid on school violence. Long Board simply has a better program and ways to keep the kids in order and motivate them. Along with uniforms, the school also developed new policies and regulations in order to bring the violence down. Also, what was the violence like before uniforms? It's not impressive that it dropped 90% if there was little bullying in the first place. To conclude, uniforms prevent kids from expressing themselves, it limits their options of what to wear and can affect their decision making skills later in life. Uniforms can cost a lot depending on what school it is. Uniforms can be uncomfortable, and therefore can limit student's attention span and learning ability. And lastly, it's just plain boring, seeing the same clothes over and over, being just like everyone else. Weren't we taught that being exactly the same is bad? That we should stand out? Thank you for a good debate, best of luck to your future ones.

    School Uniforms

I believe there should be school uniforms in schools. For one, think about how much time you would have to sleep in! All you have to do the night before is pick out your uniform and you're good. You dont have to worry about picking out specific clothing or worrying about what people will think; everyone is wearing the same thing anyway! Also, you dont have to run around buying new clothes for the school year. You only have to buy one set of uniforms. This can help you save a lot of money. Sure, the uniform may be bland and color oriented, but you are at school to get an education, NOT to make a fashion statement to your fellow peers.

10)(11) With freedom of choice relating to clothing,...

    School uniforms should be banned

"Decreased time in the morning getting dressed" Even so, school uniforms deprive students of identification. Adults have the freedom to choose what they want to wear at any time, any wear. The average American lifespan is 79 years (6), and the average American public school offers 6.64 hours of education in the school day and 180 school days in the year (7). If a student spends his learning time from kindergarten to 12th grade, that"s about 15537.6 hours or about 2 years which is approximately 2.5% of their life spent in school. A good chunk of that time is spent during the stages of adolescence. Denying other clothing options from students may make them unprepared for the working world (8)(9). Finding a self-image is crucial during this period, and one of means of identification is clothing choices. (10)(11) With freedom of choice relating to clothing, students can find their individuality and develop it along the way as they reach the adult world, making them better prepared when it comes to dressing. "Uniforms are safe" Actually, uniforms can increase violence in schools. According to Tony Volk, PhD, an Associate Professor at Brock University says "Overall, there is no evidence in bullying literature that supports a reduction in violence due to school uniforms." (12) Also, a 2007 study found out that the average number of assaults that are increased by 14 per year in the most violent schools are caused by school uniforms. (13) Additionally, a 1999 study conducted by Texas Southern University concluded that school discipline incidents rose by 12% after introducing uniforms. (3) A similar situation in Miami-Dade County showed fights in middle school nearly doubled after one year of mandatory school uniforms. (14)(15) This conveys that school uniforms causes more harm than good, as shown by the examples above. Sources: (6) http://data.worldbank.org... (7) https://nces.ed.gov...
